As for Ms. Karetzky, Ms. Ferrer said, her paintings are also “very much grounded in the neighborhood, though the narrative is more open-ended. They are banal moments, like a woman checking her texts. Yet because they are painted, they become something else. So what you see is both very familiar and very strange at the same time.” For her part, Ms. Karetzky said she aims to suggest a diary opened at random. “It’s like you’re reading one sentence, and you have to guess the context,” she said.
